Suzanne Kosmos

Suzanne Kosmos lost 40% to 60% against Republican Sandra Adams in Florida's 24th Congressional District.

Suzanne Kosmas (D) is running for re-election for her 2nd term in Florida’s 24th District.  She faces a general election race.

Kosmas has a reputation in her district for being a strong, principled leader, following the Republican corruption of her predecessor Tom Feeney.  She has been a target of Republicans since her election in 2008, but Kosmas is a hard worker and has brought a lot of benefits to her district from Washington.

Background:
●    Kosmas served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1996 to 2004, serving four consecutive terms before she was termed out
●    In 2008, Kosmas was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Flordia, beating her Republican opponent by a wide margin
●    In Congress Kosmas serves on the Financial Services Committee and the Science and Technology Committee
●    Kosmas earned a 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America in 2009

Kosmas’ Position on Key Issues:

  • Women’s Rights: Kosmas supports equal rights and equal pay.  One of Kosmas’ first votes in Congress was in favor of the Lily Ledbetter Act.
  • Reproductive Rights: Kosmas is a strong supporter of a woman’s right to choose.  In the Florida legislature, Kosmas fought against attacks on women’s abortion rights and legislation that sought to violate the privacy of women seeking abortions.
  • LGBT Rights:  Kosmas voted for the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which includes tougher penalties for crimes motivated because of a victim’s ethnicity, religion, gender, disability, or sexual identity.

General Election Opponents: 3 Republicans are vying to compete with Kosmas in her right-learning district- all are anti-choice.  The Republican primary will be held on August 24th.

Prospects: Kosmas’ district is more moderate than many Republicans believe.  Obama carried the district in 2008.  While Floridian Republicans are sorting out their late primary, the national Republican Party has already begun attacking Kosmas in an attempt to make her an easier target come fall.
